Flower Garden
Purple Foliage Shrubs bring depth, interest, and uniqueness to gardens. They can be used to create a cooling effect in the garden or provide a beautiful backdrop for bright perennials. They can be used to add contrast to otherwise green beds, as stand alone specimen plantings, or even used as “green” purple screens. Here are my personal favorites –

Ninebarks – Not only are ninebarks beautiful in terms of color and form, but they are also North American natives that provide 4 seasons of interest. The bloom white or pink in spring, are followed by gorgeous seed pods, hold their leaves through fall, and the peeling bark adds interest in the winter.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry – This plant delivers not only beautiful purple foliage, but also lovely purple berries in the late fall! This Callicarpa is more compact than the native species and I can never have enough branches to cut and arrange with. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/callicarpa/pearl-glam-beautyberry-callicarpa-x

Winecraft Black Smokebush – If you like the color and leaf structure of smokebushes, but not their form then the Winecraft series is for you. These smokebushes have a rounded appearance and stay smaller than traditional smokebushes. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/cotinus/winecraft-black-smokebush-cotinus-coggygria

Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus – While not a true shrub, I wanted to include this on the list as a money saving option. This plant is primarily grown as annual cut foliage, although it is considered a tender perennial in zones 8 and 9. Grow this from seed for almost no money at all and see if you like the look of a purple shrub in your landscape – https://www.johnnyseeds.com/flowers/hibiscus/mahogany-splendor-hibiscus-seed-4013.html

Black Lace Elderberry – This lovely shrub has deep purple leaves and lovely light pink blooms. It makes a great purple screen or a stand alone specimen plant. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/sambucus/black-lace-elderberry-sambucus-nigra
