Orchids are beautiful flowering plants with a sweet fragrance. They come in various shapes, sizes, colours and scents. They are mainly used in bouquets and for decoration. Orchids require high maintenance to look after the plant. Most Orchids are perennial herbs with simple leaves. They blossom into flowers if grown under appropriate conditions.
Phalaenopsis hybrids are usually considered the Beginner’s Orchids. The other commonly available Orchids are Moth Orchid and Cattleya that grow well at home.

Soil

Orchid roots require far more air than potting soil. A porous mix would be best suitable for Orchids.

Light

Direct sunlight should be avoided. Too little light is one of the common mistakes beginners make.
Temperature

Orchids grow well in warm temperature between 21°C and 29°C.

Humidity

Orchids require a high humid atmosphere to flourish. An effort has to be made to provide your plant with extra moisture.
Nutrition

Orchids need nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium for growth.

Water

Overwatering kills far more Orchids than underwatering. So water your plant carefully only when the soil is dried up.

Pruning

Trimming Orchids should only be done to remove leaves, roots or flower stems that have already died or have turned brown.
