This organic matter can break down quickly or slowly depending on temperature, rainfall, soil type underneath….
Once the plants are finished I’ll chop them at the base, leave the roots in the ground and cover them up again with a layer of compost and mulch.
Beds like this will need ongoing organic layers added as the worms and microorganisms break the layers down. You can use whatever organic matter you find; leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, straw, hay, compost…
