Gardening for Beginners
Be a successful gardener by being a W.I.S.E gardener. Don’t forget these tips when planning your first garden. These simple tips are often overlooked and can cause beginner gardeners to become overwhelmed and fail before reaping the benefits of their own garden.

W – Water
While this sounds obvious, it is one of the most common aspects of gardening that are not managed properly. Different vegetable require different amounts of water, although most require a substantial amount of water to grow and produce healthy fruit. Watering must be done regularly to provide the amount of water needed for healthy vegetables. So set an alarm to check on your garden daily and water if needed. Or get an automatic hose bid timer with a soaker hose to make this a much lower maintenance task.

I – Inexpensive
You don’t need to buy or build fancy garden boxes. You don’t need to buy fancy gardening tools. Water, good soil, and seeds is all it takes. A mix of peat moss, organic compost, and some organic manure compost makes a great soil for growing vegetables. All of which a very inexpensive to purchase by the bag. So, save your money and expand your garden once you have succeeded with your first garden.

S – Small
Everyone wants a full and large garden to be able to go pick fresh vegetables everyday. However, rows and rows of vegetables not only add complication to your garden but also extra care, maintenance, water, protection, etc… For your first garden, increase your chances of success by starting small. Square-foot gardening requires very little space. 3 plants can flourish in 3 square feet. You can also grow very successfully in pots. So no need to tear up your yard for first garden.

E – Easy
Start with vegetables that are easy to grow and that you know you will eat (a lot of) when they are ready to harvest. Tomatoes, Okra, Squash, and herbs are some of the easiest to grow and can produce a large harvest throughout the growing season. Give yourself a win with easy vegetables first, then progress from there.
